Glimmering ocean, white sandy beach, clear blue sky, lush green forest.
Hawaii is synonymous with the nickname “paradise on earth”, and it’s easy to see why. With a tropical climate, laid back atmosphere and some of the best views in the world, the Aloha State is the perfect place for adventure seekers and dreamers alike.Fantastic weather aside, there’s a lot more reasons to make Hawaii your next holiday destination than simply the famous Waikiki Beach and North Shore.
1. Discover a different paradise
Lanai isn’t as well known as Maui and Oahu, yet many people still flock here to visit a particular group of residents of the island. Approximately 20 minutes away from Lanai city, hundreds of cats live in their own secluded paradise at Lanai Cat Sanctuary, fondly nicknamed the “Fur Seasons”. This nonprofit organization was established in 2009 to rescue the stray cats who were in danger of being hunted due to overpopulation, and currently shelters about 600 cats. The sanctuary is open all year round and visitors are welcome to adopt the cats, make donations or simply hang out with the felines.
2. Taste the locally-grown coffee
Hawaii is the
only state in the
United States that
produces coffee with
about 790 coffee
farms around the
island archipelago.
The largest coffee growing district is Kona,
a district on the Big
Island, thanks to the
volcanic soil full of
minerals which encourage
the healthy growth of
coffee trees. Kona coffee
is best enjoyed and
purchased while on the
Big Island as there are
possibilities for the
beans to be mixed with
other origins off-island.
3. Be stunned by the Painted Forest
known as Mindanao Gum, Rainbow Eucalyptus has a unique multi-hued bark that appears like it’s been hand painted with abstract patterns using a brush. Photo Credit: thaths on Flickr
With so many stunning attractions, it’s no wonder that Hawaii is every photographer’s dreams. Just off the Road to Hana lies Keanae Arboretum, where there’s a cluster of colourful trees that can make even the world’s greatest artists envy.
4. Appreciate the Islamic art at Shangri La

Some may not believe that there would be a dedicated foundation for Islamic art collection in Hawaii, but there is. The estate’s furnishing and her collection of Islamic art reflect her extensive travels around the world, particularly the Middle East. After she passed away, the Doris Duke Foundation of Islamic Art was established to preserve her collection which includes over 2500 pieces of art and artifacts from Islamic countries all around the world.
5. Cool down with guri guri
This ice-cream sherbet hybrid was invented in the 20th century by Jokichi Tasaka even before he emigrated to Maui from Japan. The dessert was initially called “goodie goodie”, as in something good to eat, but he later changed the named to guri guri which is easier to pronounce.
guri has been kept
as a family secret for
decades, but it is said
that a mixture of guava
juice, lemon-lime soda
and condensed milk are
used as the ingredients.
Tasaka Guri Guri is now
located at Maui Mall and
run by Jokichi’s
granddaughters.
