Dreaming of a White Christmas? Whether you’re travelling with family or partner, everyone dreams of experiencing a snowy Christmas at least once in their lives.
We’ve rounded up five destinations to travel to this winter to make your dream come true!
1. Hokkaido, Japan
Enveloped in vibrant illuminations and a blanket of white snow, Hokkaido should be on top of everyone’s dream winter holidays list. With snow-covered mountains, world-famous ski resorts and hot spring baths, the snow country of Hokkaido is the best place to experience real Japanese winter. Among the most popular event is Sapporo White Illumination, which features a light display with about 830,000 lights at Odori Park.
2. Nuuk, Greenland
Nuuk is one of the best kept secrets for a winter getaway. During the holiday season, the town of Nuuk comes alive with Christmas decorations and lights. At every central square and roundabout from Nuuk city center all the way to the furthest neighbourhood, there’d be a twinkling Christmas tree as though to make sure nobody ever forgets about it. What makes spending Christmas in Nuuk an even more magical experience is catching a glimpse of the aurora borealis.
3. Lapland, Finland
Instead of spending this Christmas waiting for Santa’s visit, why not go directly to visit him at his home? Lapland has been famed for the Santa Claus Village, where you can meet Father Christmas himself at Christmas House, and explore other activities and exhibitions. Don’t fancy meeting Santa? There’s plenty of other attractions in Lapland, including the phenomenal aurora borealis!
4. Salzburg, Austria
Famed for being the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location of The Sound of Music, Salzburg is so mesmerizing during Christmas that it feels like walking into a fairy tale. Did you know here’s where “Silent Night”, the most famous Christmas carol was written and composed? The Christmas Market, which is the oldest market in Salzburg, fills the main squares and the courtyard of the Hohensalzburg Castle.
5. Prague, Czech Republic
Like many other Eastern European cities, Prague shines during the festive Christmas season, but unlike them, the city sees only a fair amount of snow. Don’t let this hold you back because if anything, this only makes experiencing white Christmas in Prague even more special! Get into the Christmas spirit by singing the carol with the locals at Old Town Square. Admire the icy formations on St Vitus Cathedral and skate your hearts out surrounded by lovely panoramas at the public ice rink.
