1. Burj Khalifa, Dubai
Since it was completed in 2010, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa stands on top of the list as the world’s tallest skyscraper. The building has 163 floors made up of over 30,000 residences, 19 residential towers, 9 hotels and a shopping mall as well as a 30-acre man-made lake within its vicinity. Burj Khalifa stands at a total height of 829.8 meters and holds several world records, including tallest freestanding structure and world’s highest elevator installation.
2. Shanghai Tower, China
Standing at 632 meters, Shanghai Tower is the second tallest building in the world. The construction of Shanghai Tower took eight years and was completed in 2015, although it didn’t open to public until 2016. The tower takes the form of 9 cylindrical buildings stacked on top of each other. With 133 floors including 5 underground, the building is also home to the world’s second fastest elevator and world’s highest observation deck within a structure (shared with Ping An Finance Centre).
3. Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower Hotel, Saudi Arabia
Translated as “Towers of the House (of God)”, Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower Hotel is situated right across the main entrance of Masjid al-Haram, Islam’s most sacred place where the Kaaba is located and the world’s largest mosque. The building complex consists of residential apartments, hotel rooms, a 5-storey shopping mall, a museum and a Lunar Observation Center to see the moon during the holy month.
4. Ping An Finance Centre, China
Ping An Finance Centre is a 115-storey skyscraper located within the Central Business District in Shenzhen. With the height of 599 meters, the building houses the headquarters of Ping An Insurances as well as hotel rooms, offices, a shopping mall and an observation deck. Initially, a 60-meter antenna was planned to be added atop the building to surpass Shanghai Tower, but the plan was scrapped due to the possibility of obstructing flight paths.
5. Lotte World Tower, South Korea
Situated near the iconic Han River, Lotte World Tower is a new skyscraper which opened just in 2017. Standing at 555 meters, the tower has a total of 123 floors and consists of a luxury hotel, retail outlets, residence units, private offices and Seoul Sky, a seven-storey observation deck that also includes a cafe and a premium lounge bar. Lotte World Tower is located next to the first-generation Lotte World complex which contains an indoor theme park, a shopping mall and movie theatres.
